Alpine’s highly anticipated 2026 Hypercar is making waves in the motorsport world as the A424 undergoes a dramatic transformation during the off-season. Fresh off a breakthrough victory at the 2025 Fuji 6 Hours, the team is not resting on its laurels, but rather diving headfirst into a series of significant modifications aimed at enhancing performance and reliability for the upcoming season.
Having wrapped up the previous season with a commendable three podium finishes, including that crowning victory, Alpine’s results were overshadowed by a disappointing sixth place in the manufacturers’ standings. Vice president of motorsport Bruno Famin candidly stated, “We know that there were too many average results to hope for a better championship finish.” With sights set firmly on improvement, Alpine’s goal for the next season is clear: achieve greater consistency and elevate their competitive edge.
One of the stark reminders of the challenges faced came during the iconic Le Mans 24 Hours, where Alpine’s performance fell flat, finishing a disheartening ninth and tenth. This prompted the necessity for an overhaul, particularly to address reliability concerns that plagued the team during the last race. The first Evo Joker was employed during the previous off-season, focusing primarily on mechanical upgrades, including enhancements to the crankshaft, valves, and turbo. However, this time, the focus shifts to the aerodynamic package of the A424.
Famin explained the rationale behind the updates, revealing, “We opted for a low-drag, low-downforce car for obvious reasons linked to the Le Mans track.” Yet, the introduction of a two-stage Balance of Performance (BoP) system last year complicated matters for teams like Alpine, who had committed to a Le Mans-optimized aerodynamic setup. The adjustments they received in exchange for low-speed power did not compensate for the lack of downforce, creating a challenging situation for drivers to harness that newfound power effectively.
Visually, the A424’s updates are subtle yet impactful. The car’s rear has seen the removal of small gurneys and diffuser fences, while the front sports a sleek carbon fiber nose that signals a revised splitter. The dive planes have also been trimmed, hinting at a careful recalibration to align with the new regulatory landscape.
In a thrilling development, the 2026-spec A424 hit the track for its initial tests just days after the 2025 World Endurance Championship finale. The Bahrain International Circuit hosted the first laps, followed by a critical session at Paul Ricard featuring both daytime and nighttime runs, with drivers Frédéric Makowiecki and Jules Gounon behind the wheel. Meanwhile, Charles Milesi was gearing up for the Asian Le Mans Series in Malaysia, and Antonio Felix da Costa was competing in Brazil for the opening round of the Formula E season.
These testing sessions are crucial as they serve as the final validation for the car before its homologation run at the Windshear wind tunnel in North Carolina, scheduled for mid-December. Another test is anticipated before the 2026 WEC prologue in Lusail, leading up to the season-opening Qatar 1812 km race on March 28.
On the team front, the recent test at Paul Ricard also marked a significant onboarding session for new recruits. Alpine has welcomed fresh performance engineers and a new race engineer specifically for the #35 car, David Ladouce, who joins from Porsche Penske Motorsport. All these new additions will be under the guidance of Fabrice Roussel, the newly appointed technical director of the Alpine Endurance Team.
The roster of drivers has also seen changes, with Mick Schumacher moving to IndyCar and Paul-Loup Chatin joining Genesis Magma Racing. In their stead, Alpine is bringing in da Costa and likely Williams Formula 1 reserve Victor Martins, the 2022 Formula 3 champion, to bolster their team for the upcoming challenges.
With these strategic updates and personnel changes, Alpine is poised to make a formidable impact in the 2026 season, aiming not only for podiums but for a championship that has eluded them thus far. The motorsport community will be eagerly watching as the A424 gears up for another thrilling chapter in endurance racing.
