In a thrilling announcement that has sent shockwaves through the motorsport community, Valentino Rossi, the iconic nine-time world champion, has reaffirmed his commitment to car racing as he gears up for a full-time return to the GT World Challenge Europe in 2026. Following a brief foray into the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and a stint with BMW, the racing legend is ready to shift gears and focus intently on a new chapter in his illustrious career.

Rossi, who transitioned from MotoGP to professional car racing after his motorcycle career concluded, made his mark in the automotive realm with Belgian team WRT, initially piloting Audi vehicles throughout the 2022 season. As WRT transitioned to BMW, Rossi took the wheel of the powerful BMW machines, making a notable debut at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2024. His dual campaign in both the GT World Challenge and the WEC showcased his versatility, yet it was his podium finishes in the endurance series that truly highlighted his racing prowess.

However, after achieving a commendable second-place finish in the WEC, Rossi made the strategic decision to withdraw from the series, citing family commitments as a significant factor. “The choice was mine,” Rossi stated, emphasizing the personal nature of his decision to step away from endurance racing.

During a highly anticipated launch event for his VR46 MotoGP team in Rome, Rossi confirmed his return to the GT World Challenge Europe, expressing enthusiasm for the series that has been close to his heart since the onset of his racing journey. “I will race in the GTWC, and I’m very happy, because it’s a championship that I really like and in which I took part at the beginning of my racing career,” he shared with Sky Sports.

Rossi’s strategic pivot to the GT World Challenge is grounded in logistical considerations—European races offer a more manageable schedule compared to the extensive travel required for WEC events. “With two little girls and a family, it’s difficult to be away for so many days,” he explained, underscoring the importance of balancing his professional pursuits with family life.

His renewed partnership with BMW, solidified by a three-year contract extension, indicates a strong alignment between the legendary racer and the iconic automotive brand. Rossi’s passion for the sport and his commitment to the GTWC shines through as he prepares to tackle upcoming races, including the highly regarded Bathurst 12 Hours in 2026.

Despite facing challenges, including retirement at the 24 Hours of Le Mans during his two appearances, Rossi remains optimistic and excited about the future. His No. 46 BMW was in a strong position during the 2025 edition of the race, showcasing his competitive spirit and determination to achieve greatness in this dynamic racing environment. Rossi’s journey continues to captivate fans and enthusiasts, as he embarks on this exhilarating new chapter in his racing career, reaffirming that the thrill of competition is alive and well in the heart of this motorsport legend.
