In a thrilling display of skill and determination, James Vowles, the Team Principal of Williams, has captured the spotlight at Yas Marina, clinching victory in the prestigious 12 Hours of the Gulf as a driver. This remarkable achievement comes on the heels of a successful season for his team, solidifying Vowles’ status not just as a strategist, but as a formidable competitor behind the wheel of a McLaren 720S GT3.

At 46 years old, Vowles embraced the challenge of this grueling endurance race, stepping into the role of driver after announcing his participation earlier this month. Joined by talented teammates Marco Pulcini, Alexander West, and Mark Sansom, the Garage 59 team displayed exceptional teamwork and skill, finishing in an impressive tenth place overall while triumphing in the AM category.

The race was a rollercoaster of emotions, with the Mercedes AMG GT3 #13, driven by Denis Remenyako, Michail Aleshin, and Adam Christodoulou, ultimately taking the overall win. However, the contest was initially dominated by the Ferrari 293 GT3 crew from AlManar by Dragon, featuring Al Faisal Al Zubair, Ben Tuck, and Christopher Froggatt, who led for a staggering nine hours. Their victory hopes were dashed by an unexpected pit stop for brake fluid replenishment, which allowed them to finish in a heartbreaking second place, just ahead of Grove Racing by GetSpeed’s Mercedes.

Looking ahead, motorsport enthusiasts will have to wait for the next edition of the 12 Hours of the Gulf, scheduled for January 10, 2027. In the meantime, fans can anticipate an exciting alternative event—a shorter GT race set for December 13, keeping the adrenaline pumping in the absence of this iconic endurance challenge. Vowles’ victory not only highlights his versatility but also adds another chapter to his illustrious career, proving that the spirit of competition knows no bounds.
