Isack Hadjar is stepping into what many consider the most challenging seat in Formula 1, but he may just hold the key to breaking a string of driver struggles at Red Bull Racing. Guenther Steiner, the former Haas team principal, has hinted that the French driver might have a crucial edge over his predecessors, who have fallen short in the high-pressure environment alongside the reigning champion, Max Verstappen.
Since Daniel Ricciardo’s departure from Red Bull at the end of 2018, the team has seen a revolving door of drivers, with only Sergio Perez managing to last more than two seasons. Perez’s four-year tenure is a stark contrast to the fates of others like Alex Albon, who lasted just a season and a half, and Yuki Tsunoda, who completed only 22 races. Liam Lawson had an even tougher break with just two races in the hot seat. This track record raises eyebrows and sets the stage for Hadjar’s entry.
But here’s where it gets interesting. The recent overhaul of chassis and power unit regulations has provided Hadjar with a unique opportunity — a clean slate. Steiner emphasized this point, stating, “I believe Hadjar is a really good racing driver. And secondly, he has the advantage of the new regulations. This allows him to start from scratch with Max.” This perspective suggests that Hadjar’s timing could not be better, even after his relatively short stint with the Racing Bulls.
Historically, Red Bull has tailored its car development around Verstappen’s preferences, leaving new drivers at a disadvantage. However, Hadjar’s fresh start means he is not confined by the legacy of past designs. Steiner pointed out that both Lawson and Tsunoda faced the challenge of adapting to a car that was designed with Max’s style in mind. “Lawson and Tsunoda, however, were put in a car with which Max had a lot of experience, and they weren’t able to catch up quickly. Moreover, the field was so closely matched,” he noted. Hadjar, on the other hand, is poised to either grow alongside the new car or potentially steer its development in a direction that suits him.
Steiner’s vision for Red Bull is clear: they are on the lookout for the next big talent, someone who can rise to the occasion and perhaps come close to Verstappen’s legendary status. “The motto must be that Red Bull finds a talent they believe can become nearly as good as Max,” he declared. As the spotlight turns to Hadjar, the Formula 1 world will be keenly watching to see if he can harness this “advantage” and carve out a successful legacy in a seat that has proven to be as ruthless as it is coveted. The race is on, and Hadjar might just have what it takes to turn the tide for Red Bull Racing.
