Oscar Piastri is approaching the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix with cautious optimism, uncertain about how much Mercedes’ awaited upgrade package will shake up the championship battle. As Formula 1 heads to Montréal in two weeks, the reigning frontrunners Mercedes have held back on major developments, while rivals McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari unleashed significant updates during the Miami Grand Prix weekend.
Despite McLaren’s gains with their updated MCL40, which helped Kimi Antonelli secure a third straight victory and extend his lead over Mercedes’ George Russell to 20 points in the drivers' championship, Mercedes maintained a strategic silence. The W17 cars showed only minor tweaks in Miami, signaling the team’s intent to debut a more substantial upgrade in Canada. McLaren’s strong performance in Miami, including outscoring Mercedes by three points over the sprint weekend, trimmed the constructors' championship gap to 86 points, but Piastri remains wary that Mercedes could quickly reclaim lost ground.
“It’s going to be interesting to see,” Piastri said when discussing the upgrade showdown. “We need to see where we stack up at a few different tracks. In the sprint [in Miami], to have a one-two on pure pace, that was a pretty big surprise for us. So things are working well.”
He added, “We expected the upgrades to be a good step forward, and they have been, and hopefully they are again in Canada. But, obviously, Mercedes didn’t bring a lot, and they also have an upgrade package for Canada, so we’ll have to wait and see how much that’s worth for them.”
With the Canadian GP looming as a pivotal moment, McLaren’s recent momentum faces a stern test. Mercedes’ strategic patience could pay off, potentially resetting the competitive order as the season intensifies. The balance of power hangs in the air, with every lap in Montréal promising to reveal who truly holds the edge.
