NASCAR’s AJ Allmendinger vows to overcome doubts and impress IndyCar legend at Rolex 24 at Daytona

AJ Allmendinger is gearing up for a thrilling return to the Rolex 24 at Daytona, marking his 16th appearance in this prestigious endurance race. As he prepares to join the elite ranks of Acura Meyer Shank Racing w/Curb Agajanian, the seasoned NASCAR star is grappling with self-doubt, openly expressing concerns about his pace and the weight of expectations from his teammates, particularly the illustrious Mike Shank, who has been a pivotal figure in his career.

Allmendinger, a veteran of the NASCAR Cup Series and a former open-wheel racer, is stepping back into the 24-hour classic after a four-year hiatus. His last appearance in 2021 saw him finish an impressive fourth overall, and now he is ready to tackle the demanding challenge of the new Acura ARX-06 in the GTP division. “There’s lots of buttons and it’s tricky to drive,” Allmendinger admitted, emphasizing the steep learning curve as he strives to master the intricacies of the car he tested just last November.

Sharing the No. 60 Acura with full-time drivers Colin Braun and Tom Blomqvist, Allmendinger is also set to team up with the legendary Scott Dixon, a six-time IndyCar champion, for the grueling race. The stakes are high, and the pressure is palpable as Allmendinger acknowledges his fears of being the “weak link” in a star-studded lineup. “I don’t want to let them down. I know I’ll be the weak link; I just don’t want to be the weakest link in the chain,” he stated candidly, revealing his determination to contribute effectively to the team’s success.

This collaboration with Shank is steeped in history, dating back to 2006 when they first teamed up. Their partnership flourished, culminating in a victorious campaign in 2012, where Allmendinger, alongside teammates Justin Wilson, Ozz Negri, and John Pew, clinched the overall title. Reflecting on their journey, Allmendinger expressed both gratitude and hope for future collaborations, saying, “It’s been a fun ride and hopefully this isn’t the last one. We’ll see if there’s more.”

The countdown is on as the 64th running of the Rolex 24 approaches, starting late afternoon on Saturday, January 24, and concluding on Sunday afternoon. Preceding this iconic event, the Roar Before the Rolex 24 test sessions will kick off on January 16, allowing teams to fine-tune their strategies and equipment. Notably, Trackhouse Racing’s 19-year-old rookie Connor Zilisch is also set to make his debut in the GTP class, adding another layer of excitement to the unfolding drama of the event.

As Allmendinger steps into this next chapter, he carries with him the hopes of his team and the weight of his own aspirations. The Rolex 24 at Daytona promises to be a showcase of talent, endurance, and the relentless pursuit of victory, and Allmendinger is ready to give it everything he has.
