McLaren remains confident in Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri after dramatic Chinese GP disaster

In a season that has begun as a nightmare for McLaren, the team’s boss, Andrea Stella, has openly acknowledged the struggles facing star drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. After a dismal start to the 2026 Formula 1 season, which has seen them lagging far behind rivals Mercedes and Ferrari, the pressure is mounting. Norris, the reigning world champion, managed only a fifth-place finish in the opener in Australia, while Piastri’s campaign took a disastrous turn when he crashed out just before his home Grand Prix. The situation worsened last weekend in China, where both drivers were unable to race due to serious electrical problems with their cars.

McLaren finds itself adrift in third place in the constructor standings, a staggering 80 points behind the dominant Mercedes squad. Norris sits sixth in the driver standings with a mere 15 points, while Piastri languishes in twelfth, having scraped together just three points during the Shanghai Sprint. With such a bleak outlook, Stella described the current phase as a “tough moment” for the team, yet he remains optimistic about their ability to rebound. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a “winner’s mindset” and learning from their misfortunes.

Stella pointed out that the team’s journey, particularly after their triumphant double championship win last season, has been a significant learning curve. “If we consider that Oscar has not been able to start a race in the start of the 2026 campaign, that’s pretty difficult for Oscar to process,” he said, acknowledging the psychological toll on the young driver. However, he highlighted the positive attitude of both Norris and Piastri in the face of adversity, noting that they are committed to focusing on what they can control moving forward.

The team principal reflected on the lessons learned from previous setbacks, reiterating that true champions emerge not just from victories but from overcoming challenges. “The victory was not in Abu Dhabi. The victory was in Qatar and in Vegas,” he remarked, underscoring how the resilience shown in difficult moments is what shapes champions.

As McLaren looks ahead, attention turns to the upcoming Miami Grand Prix, where significant upgrades to their car are expected. Commentators like David Croft have pointed out that McLaren must address not only the power issues with their Mercedes engine but also improve the aerodynamics of their MCL40 car. “To have two separate issues that stops their cars is a big worry, but it shows how fragile these cars are,” Croft noted, emphasizing the importance of reliability in racing.

With the clock ticking and the competition heating up, McLaren must capitalize on the upcoming race to regain their footing in the championship race. The stakes are high, and as the iconic Suzuka Circuit awaits the drivers later this month, all eyes will be on McLaren to see if they can turn their fortunes around. Fans and analysts alike are eager to witness whether the team can harness their resilience and bounce back from this tumultuous start.
