Helmut Marko has opened up about a pivotal moment in Max Verstappen’s racing career, revealing the dramatic reasons behind his decision to prohibit the Dutch star from taking a Formula 1 car for a spin at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. As Verstappen gears up to return to this iconic and perilous track for his latest challenge, the stakes couldn’t be higher, and the tension is palpable.
Known as the ‘Green Hell’, the Nordschleife is not just another race track; it is one of the most formidable circuits in the world, a place where only the bravest dare to compete. Its reputation has surged in recent years, attracting drivers from various disciplines eager to showcase their skills outside of Formula 1—especially in endurance and GT racing. Verstappen, who made his mark on this thrilling circuit last year, is set to take the wheel of his GT3 team’s Mercedes AMG in the NLS2 event this weekend.
However, Marko revealed that Verstappen’s fascination with the Nordschleife dates back much further. The former Red Bull advisor recounted a thrilling proposal from Verstappen himself: the young prodigy wanted to execute a demo run in a Red Bull Formula 1 car. “Years ago, Max told me enthusiastically about the Nordschleife. He wanted to do a demo run with a Red Bull Formula 1 car. But with me, all alarm bells went off at that time,” Marko disclosed. The mere thought of unleashing a modern F1 machine on the narrow, high-speed layout of the Nordschleife, fraught with minimal run-off and unforgiving barriers, sent shivers down Marko’s spine.
The idea of a demo run was swiftly dismissed by Marko, who recalled the cautionary tales surrounding the circuit. “There was no question of a demo run! Max had seen that insane video in which Timo Bernhard broke the lap record with a Le Mans Porsche,” he explained. The 2018 record lap by Bernhard in Porsche’s 919 Hybrid Evo stands as one of the most remarkable feats in racing history, igniting Verstappen’s competitive spirit. Marko understood all too well that the young driver was eager to challenge that record. “I think he wanted to beat that again with the Red Bull,” he said, highlighting the fierce ambition that drives Verstappen.
Yet, Marko was resolute in his decision: “That was too dangerous for me. That’s why I put a stop to it and banned it.” His protective instincts as a team leader shone through, prioritizing safety over spectacle. Despite this setback in Verstappen’s pursuit of Nordschleife glory in F1, the champion has not been deprived of the thrill of the circuit entirely.
“Fortunately, he can now enjoy himself on the Nordschleife with the Mercedes GT3,” Marko noted, acknowledging that while the dream of an F1 run may be on hold, Verstappen’s passion for the track remains unabated. However, Marko couldn’t help but express a lingering concern: “I fear that he still has Timo Bernhard’s lap record in the back of his mind. After all, he is a driver of the old school.”
As the excitement builds for Verstappen’s return, the racing world watches with bated breath, wondering if he may yet find a way to etch his name in history at the Nordschleife, a track that continues to captivate and challenge the greatest talents in motorsport.
