In a thrilling turn of events, Matt Payne has catapulted himself and Penrite Racing into the spotlight, claiming an unprecedented position atop the championship standings for the very first time. This remarkable achievement comes after a nail-biting performance during the Melbourne SuperSprint opener, where Payne executed a masterful maneuver to overtake Broc Feeney and secure a vital second place.
This is not just a personal milestone for the 23-year-old Kiwi; it marks a significant breakthrough for Penrite Racing, a team that has steadily evolved since Payne’s debut at Bathurst in 2022. The partnership has blossomed, and together they have made history, with last season already highlighting their potential when Payne helped the team clinch its first Peter Brock Trophy alongside veteran Garth Tander, as well as a groundbreaking outright round victory in New Zealand.
Despite not having tallied a victory in the current 2026 season, Payne’s consistency has been nothing short of impressive. With four consecutive podium finishes and a commendable fourth-place finish as his lowest result in the first five sprints, his performance has kept him firmly in contention.
“This is the first time leading the championship which is pretty exciting,” Payne exclaimed, reflecting the joy and pride felt throughout the entire team. “Everyone is stoked. The whole team has been working hard so it is a good reward, but there is still so long to go. A lot of racing and long time to hold on.”
Payne demonstrated his prowess on the track, moving from fourth to second place in a race that kept fans on the edge of their seats. While he closed in on Brodie at the finish, he lamented, “I just ran out of laps,” highlighting the fierce competition and his relentless drive to push harder.
Now entering his fourth season in the racing circuit, Payne understands the immense challenge that lies ahead in maintaining this newfound lead. “It’s all about consistency and trying to win some races, that’s what’s going to get you the most points,” he stated with determination. Even though he has yet to cross the finish line first this year, his track record of podium finishes speaks volumes about his potential.
As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Payne and Penrite Racing to see if they can capitalize on their momentum and convert these promising performances into victories, solidifying their status as formidable contenders in the championship landscape.
