Cameron stunned by unforgettable sydney weekend filled with wild surprises

In a whirlwind of adrenaline and unexpected triumph, Aaron Cameron experienced a rollercoaster of emotions during the opening weekend of the 2026 Supercars season in Sydney. Despite a bittersweet conclusion, the Blanchard Racing Team (BRT) driver cannot shake the buzz from what was a remarkable start for his team. The Blanchard Mustangs shocked the Supercars community, with Cameron and his teammate James Golding clinching the front row and securing a stunning double podium finish in the season opener.

Throughout the grueling Dunlop Sydney 500, both drivers showcased their prowess by qualifying in the top ten for all three races, a feat that speaks volumes about their potential and resilience. For a team that finished at the bottom of the championship standings in 2025, this remarkable turnaround is nothing short of sensational.

Cameron, who had shown flashes of speed during the bp Adelaide Grand Final, expressed surprise at his own performance. “I wasn’t that confident coming into this weekend, especially with only half the test being on the shorter Druitt circuit,” he shared candidly. “I didn’t quite know how I was going to go, but the team did such a great job with the set-up of the car; it was just a dream to drive.” The driver’s humble admission underscores the hard work and dedication of the BRT team, who poured countless hours into preparation over the offseason.

The excitement didn’t stop there. “This weekend was I expecting to be in the fight for a top five? Not at all,” Cameron admitted, beaming with pride for his team. “So stoked for the whole team and everyone that put in the hard yards over the off season. It has been an exceptional weekend to get my first Supercars podium, especially with Jimmy and a front row lock out as well; there are just so many positives that come out of this weekend.”

The momentum gained from this exhilarating start has Cameron and BRT buzzing with optimism for the rest of the season. “It is just so awesome for the Blanchard Racing Team, and we are just so pumped to go racing for the rest of the year,” he declared. The young driver is eager to refine their approach and maintain the speed that saw them shine in Sydney. “Last year I would drive just as hard, but only be 20th. To be able to do what we did this weekend and at the test as well was a great sign. Hopefully, we can keep this form going and continue building this team, which is still very young. I cannot wait for the rest of the year.”

However, the weekend’s brilliance took a sharp turn into disappointment on Sunday. Following a series of wheel dramas that sidelined Golding, all eyes were on Cameron as he fought valiantly for a top position. Holding a strong fourth place at the beginning of the final lap, disaster struck. A collision with Brodie Kostecki at Turn 2 sent Cameron spiraling down to 17th place, shattering his hopes for a podium finish.

Cameron expressed his frustration candidly, stating, “It was not a podium that got away, but certainly a top five that did. I am not happy with what happened at Turn 2. It still does not make sense to me for what it is. It’s for fourth place in a sprint race in Sydney. Nothing memorable like Bathurst.” The incident proved costly, leaving Cameron with a bitter taste as he reflected on lost points early in the season.

“There’s a lot to unpack from this race, and I’m sure me and Brodie will chat at some point just to understand what he was thinking,” he noted. The clash at Turn 2 overshadowed what could have been a perfect weekend, leaving Cameron eager to address the incident and move forward. As the season unfolds, the Blanchard Racing Team is set to build on this promising start, despite the setback, making fans anticipate what’s next for this dynamic duo.
