Pecco Bagnaia faces crucial advice from MotoGP legend to conquer mental hurdles

Published:

In a striking revelation that has sent shockwaves through the MotoGP community, three-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo has boldly asserted that Pecco Bagnaia must enlist the help of a sports psychologist to overcome the staggering slump he endured in 2025. Once hailed as a formidable contender to Marc Marquez at Ducati, Bagnaia’s promising trajectory took a nosedive, raising eyebrows and concerns alike among fans and experts.

After a stellar 2024 season where Bagnaia clinched 11 grand prix victories and narrowly missed a third championship by a mere 10 points, expectations were sky-high. However, the 2025 season told a different story. The young Italian rider faced a harrowing battle with confidence issues, particularly with the front-end of his GP25 bike. This struggle translated into dismal performance, resulting in only two race wins and a disheartening five-race streak without scoring a single point. Ultimately, he found himself languishing in fifth place, a staggering 257 points behind Marquez.

Both Ducati and Bagnaia appeared bewildered by his sudden decline, as attempts to tweak bike setups yielded little to no improvement. Lorenzo, witnessing this decline from a distance, emphasized the psychological aspect of racing, advocating for Bagnaia to tap into external support. “Bagnaia was in a perfect position at Ducati: two-time world champion, Italian, Italian bike, number one,” Lorenzo remarked, pointing out how the emergence of Marquez as a rival could have shaken Bagnaia’s confidence, leading to self-doubt and diminished enthusiasm.

Lorenzo’s call to action is clear: “In my opinion, Pecco has lost this self-confidence and enthusiasm; he’s a bit too negative. He needs to regain his cheerfulness right away; otherwise, he risks having difficulties with his next contract.” The two-time champion believes that a three-month hiatus, combined with the opportunity to test a new bike, could serve as a much-needed reset for Bagnaia. Yet, Lorenzo insists that Bagnaia should seek guidance from professionals, perhaps even reaching out to Valentino Rossi’s VR46 team or consulting with a sports psychologist.

Lorenzo’s own experience serves as a testament to the potential benefits of such support. He recalls how Andrea Dovizioso turned his career around after working with a psychologist in 2017, transforming his mindset and reigniting his confidence without altering his riding technique. “You have to be humble, have no ego, and say: look, I have a problem, I’m going to try,” Lorenzo advised, emphasizing the importance of addressing mental barriers in a sport where precision and confidence are paramount.

As Bagnaia grapples with these challenges, the clock is ticking. The upcoming months will be critical for him to rediscover the joy and enthusiasm that propelled him to the forefront of MotoGP. Will he heed Lorenzo’s advice and take the necessary steps to reclaim his position among the elite? The MotoGP world is watching closely, eager to see if Bagnaia can rise from the ashes and reclaim his championship aspirations.
