Martin’s shocking secret: Why he hid his latest MotoGP injury from the world

In a shocking twist that has left the MotoGP community buzzing, Jorge Martin’s withdrawal from the initial 2026 pre-season test came as a complete surprise. Just weeks prior, at the Aprilia team launch, he appeared fit and ready to race, showing no signs of the troubling fitness issues that would soon come to light. Having made a triumphant return at the last race of the previous season, Martin seemed to have fully shaken off his earlier injuries. However, the wheels of fate turned dramatically at the Sepang test, where he revealed he had to undergo yet another surgery.

This recent revelation marks a significant moment for the reigning 2024 world champion, who attended the Sepang event despite being sidelined. For the first time since announcing his surgery, Martin spoke candidly with the media, shedding light on the extent of his injuries. He admitted that he had kept quiet about undergoing two additional surgical procedures to address lingering complications from injuries sustained during a catastrophic crash at the Japanese Grand Prix last October. The crash, which occurred on the opening lap of the sprint race at Motegi, not only knocked him out of the race but also severely impacted his season.

Martin’s struggle didn’t end there. Although he returned to compete in the Valencia finale just six weeks post-injury, he soon realized that his recovery was far from complete. “After the Valencia race, I was more or less feeling good,” he shared, “but a few days after I started to have a lot of pain in the hand and in the collarbone, in my normal life at home.” This painful reality prompted him to seek a second opinion, which confirmed his fears: the bones had not healed properly.

Facing the prospect of yet another surgery was daunting for Martin. “To go for surgery again was really tough, but it was the best thing for my future and to finally be at my 100%,” he said, reflecting on a challenging year where he never felt fully fit. His decision to keep the surgery under wraps stemmed from a desire to minimize distractions during his recovery, especially after enduring a grueling season marked by six separate injuries. “I wanted to be relaxed at home even if I was recovering again. I didn’t want a lot of people calling me,” Martin explained.

With surgery now behind him, Martin is focused on his return to the track. The procedure was extensive, particularly for his wrist, requiring a bone transplant from his pelvis to finally mend the scaphoid fracture. “My target now is to be at the Buriram test [in a fortnight],” he stated, optimistic about his recovery timeline. He noted that while he may still feel some limitations in his wrist, the collarbone is healing well and gaining strength.

Martin’s journey has been one of resilience and determination. As he gears up for a new season, he remains hopeful, stating, “The hand is now consolidated 100%, but the problem is that I have to now gain a bit of strength and mobility.” With a renewed sense of purpose and a clearer path ahead, Jorge Martin is poised to tackle the challenges of the upcoming MotoGP season, determined to leave behind the shadows of his past injuries.
