The MotoGP circuit in Goiânia is facing a crisis of epic proportions, leaving fans and teams in a state of shock. A massive sinkhole has emerged on the main straight of the Autodromo Internacional de Goiânia – Ayrton Senna, and the situation is more dire than anyone anticipated. With the integrity of the track compromised, officials are scrambling to devise a rapid repair plan to ensure the safety of the riders and the continuation of the event.
In a desperate attempt to contain the situation, the area has been cordoned off while track personnel assess the damage and explore solutions. The qualifying sessions for both Moto2 and Moto3 have been postponed as a result, throwing the schedule into disarray. However, hope remains alive as the Sprint race is still on the agenda for 7 PM, pending further updates at 6 PM.
The organizers issued a critical statement acknowledging the severity of the issue, attributing it to the torrential rains that have recently battered the region. “Due to the heavy rainfall that has recently affected the area, a problem has arisen with the surface of the main straight,” they stated. The Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and MotoGP are working diligently alongside local promoters to rectify the situation as swiftly as possible. They highlighted that the next track activity will be the MotoGP Sprint Tissot, with the qualifying sessions for Moto2 and Moto3 indefinitely delayed.
Tome Alfonso, the FIM’s safety chief for MotoGP, provided insight into the cause of the sinkhole, revealing that it is a result of ground movement triggered by the relentless rains. “A depression has formed on the track surface due to soil displacement. It is located outside the racing line, and we are already taking steps to address the issue. If all goes well, we should be able to hold the MotoGP Sprint today,” he assured, instilling a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.
Images circulating online vividly depict the alarming condition of the track, showcasing the significant depression where the asphalt has given way, revealing the extent of the damage. As the racing world watches with bated breath, the urgency of the repairs becomes increasingly apparent, with the safety of the riders hanging in the balance. Fans and teams alike are left anxiously awaiting updates, hoping for a swift resolution to this unprecedented challenge.
