In a remarkable display of sportsmanship and humility, Acura drivers Renger van der Zande and Tom Blomqvist have tempered expectations heading into the prestigious Rolex 24 at Daytona. With the race weekend fast approaching, both drivers have set their sights on Porsche, declaring the German manufacturer the team to beat for a potential third consecutive victory.
With the tension palpable before Thursday’s qualifying session, van der Zande and Blomqvist spoke candidly about their prospects. They witnessed their Meyer Shank Racing-run Acura ARX-06s secure second and fifth positions on the grid, but their focus shifted to the formidable competition ahead. Van der Zande’s No. 93 car, shared with notable talents Nick Yelloly, Alex Palou, and Kaku Ohta, initially claimed the front row, clocking in a mere 0.102 seconds behind pole-sitter Jack Aitken in the No. 31 Action Racing Express Cadillac. However, a twist of fate saw the Cadillac relegated to the back of the 11-car GTP field, handing van der Zande a coveted pole position.
Blomqvist, competing in the sister No. 60 machine alongside Colin Braun, Scott Dixon, and AJ Allmendinger, climbed from fifth to fourth during qualifying. Yet, the spotlight shone on the two Penske-run Porsche 963s, which stood out for their impressive long-run performance leading up to qualifying. Blomqvist remarked, “I think Porsche looks extremely quick. They look so good.” He emphasized the strength of the Porsches in race conditions, recalling past races where they clinched victories despite not starting from pole. “They usually come on strong in the race, and they already look mega. They are the ones to beat on race pace,” he stated, underscoring the challenge that lies ahead.
Van der Zande supported Blomqvist’s assessment, identifying the Action Express Cadillac as another contender with a clear edge over the Acuras. “The Porsches will be strong, and the No. 31 Cadillac also looks strong,” he noted. He expressed his reservations about Acura’s chances, revealing, “I don’t think we have a chance to win. But we’ll see.”
As Acura gears up for this year’s race, they bring a newly updated ARX-06, having made aerodynamic adjustments in a bid to reclaim glory since their last triumph in 2023. Reflecting on the evolution of competition, Blomqvist compared the current landscape to past seasons, emphasizing Porsche’s relentless development. “In 2023 we were quite dominant and you could already see that from practice,” he recalled. He acknowledged Acura’s solid performance but recognized the strides Porsche has made since the introduction of the 963, stating, “Porsche have constantly developed and developed over the years.”
Blomqvist, however, remains optimistic that Meyer Shank Racing’s familiarity with the Acura brand after a one-year hiatus will enhance their prospects. “It feels like a big improvement,” he said, pointing out the benefits of team cohesion and experience that have developed over the past year.
Van der Zande echoed this sentiment, citing the accumulation of experience within the engineering team as a crucial factor for a stronger season. “The young guys are gelling more with the team, so if we don’t make any rookie mistakes, we should be in better shape than we were last year,” he asserted. As the team prepares with unprecedented resources and commitment, the focus shifts to execution, with van der Zande confident that the groundwork laid will pay dividends in the high-stakes environment of the Rolex 24.
As the countdown to the race continues, the stage is set not just for a thrilling showdown between Acura and its rivals, but also for a testament to resilience, teamwork, and the unyielding spirit of competition that defines endurance racing. Fans are left on the edge of their seats, eager to see if Acura can rise to the occasion and challenge the might of Porsche in what promises to be an unforgettable spectacle.
