Yuki Tsunoda is facing a harsh reality check following his much-anticipated transition to Red Bull, a move that has turned out to be “more difficult” than he ever imagined. The Japanese racer, who was promoted from the Racing Bulls team to fill the shoes of Liam Lawson after just two races, has found himself grappling with the formidable RB21. This season, Tsunoda has faced relentless challenges while trying to keep pace alongside the indomitable Max Verstappen, leaving him struggling to master the intricacies of Red Bull’s high-performance machine.
The stakes were high, but Tsunoda hit a low point during a harrowing crash at Imola that shook his confidence. The aftermath of this tumultuous season saw him only managing to secure a mere 30 points over 22 races for the Milton Keynes powerhouse. This dismal performance ultimately contributed to Red Bull’s inability to clinch a second-place finish in the constructors’ standings, forcing them to settle for an underwhelming third place.
As the dust settles on a disappointing year, Tsunoda’s fate has taken a sharp turn; he will not be returning to the grid for the 2026 season. Instead, he has been relegated to the role of test and reserve driver for the Austrian team. Reflecting on his tumultuous journey, Tsunoda candidly expressed, “There were definitely things that were more difficult than I had imagined,” during a conversation with the Japanese branch of DAZN. He acknowledged that while some aspects of the team structure mirrored that of Racing Bulls, the contrasts were stark and eye-opening.
Tsunoda humorously noted that one of the first things he noticed was a significant upgrade in accommodations, quipping, “The hotels were a lot better!” However, the real revelation came in understanding the team’s approach to car performance. He stated, “One big difference is that when the car isn’t working well, they don’t shy away from making big set-up changes. They dare to be aggressive – even just before qualifying or at times that could affect the championship. That really impressed me.”
As Tsunoda navigates this unexpected detour in his career, the lessons learned from Red Bull’s relentless pursuit of excellence may serve him well in future endeavors. The journey ahead may still be uncertain, but one thing is clear: the world of Formula 1 is as unforgiving as it is exhilarating, and Tsunoda is poised to take on whatever challenges lie ahead.
