Oscar Piastri is raising the stakes as he demands a monumental leap in performance from McLaren ahead of the Australian Grand Prix. The young talent believes that not only does his team need to step up their game overnight, but so do their rivals, who are also gearing up for a fierce showdown. After an exhilarating start to the weekend, Piastri showcased his prowess by clinching the top spot in FP2 at his home track, leaving seasoned competitors like Kimi Antonelli and George Russell in his wake.
Friday in Melbourne was anything but predictable, with the top four teams—Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren—battling it out under changing conditions. While Piastri initially struggled in FP1, finishing sixth, he emerged as the fastest driver among those utilizing Mercedes power units, setting the stage for an intense competition.
Reflecting on the day’s events, the 24-year-old driver remarked, “FP2, certainly on my side, went a lot smoother than FP1. There are just so many things to get to grips with; it’s very different to what we had last year.” Piastri emphasized the importance of this session, noting, “But no, I think FP2 as a session was pretty smooth. Was able to build some consistency and start learning properly, which was good.” His optimism was palpable as he acknowledged the need for continuous improvement, stating, “Yeah, try to see what we’ve learned today, because I think everyone’s going to find a big step overnight. So, I think we need to try and do the same.”
However, the McLaren ace remains cautious about his prospects for qualifying and race performance. Despite his impressive showing in practice, Piastri is not entirely convinced that his pace will translate into a front-row starting position. “The front few rows, hopefully. Whether it’s pole or not, I don’t know,” he said, expressing a blend of hope and uncertainty. Noting that he hasn’t yet gauged the team’s race pace compared to competitors, he added, “I’m not sure it was as good as some others around us, but I think we looked okay.”
Piastri’s primary focus now is establishing consistency and optimizing performance ahead of the crucial qualifying sessions and the race. “I think the biggest thing at the moment is just trying to build consistency, make things operate the way they should — and in FP2 it looked like we were able to get closer to doing that.” As the clock ticks down to race day, all eyes will be on McLaren to see if they can rise to the occasion and deliver the “big step” that Piastri so fervently believes is necessary. The stage is set for a thrilling showdown in Melbourne, with the pressure mounting for both the driver and the team.
