In the thrilling world of Formula 1, young sensation Oliver Bearman is rapidly making a name for himself, currently positioned fifth in the 2026 drivers’ championship after just two races. Representing the Haas F1 Team, Bearman has expressed his excitement about the impressive balance of the VF-26 chassis, which has proven to be a game-changer for the team. The early stages of the season have seen Bearman emerging as a standout performer, having amassed all 17 points for Haas while his teammate Esteban Ocon has faced a series of unfortunate setbacks.
Bearman showcased his talent with a commendable seventh-place finish in Melbourne, followed by a point-scoring performance in the China sprint race, culminating in a remarkable fifth place during the Shanghai Grand Prix. The race was not without its challenges; Bearman had a close encounter with Isack Hadjar on the opening lap, where Hadjar lost control at Turn 13, forcing Bearman to take evasive action. However, fortune favored Bearman when a timely safety car allowed him to regain valuable positions, placing him right behind Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, whom he ultimately outpaced to secure fifth.
Reflecting on the strengths of the Haas chassis, Bearman noted that the VF-26 tends to excel during race day. He anticipates a fierce challenge from Alpine throughout the season, indicating that while Haas has a solid foundation, there’s still room for improvement. “I think we’re quicker in race trim at the moment. It seems to be the case. Qualifying has been a bit more challenging,” Bearman commented, acknowledging the competitive edge Gasly displayed in China, particularly during the closing laps where he closed in on Bearman aggressively.
The rivalry between Bearman and Gasly highlights the contrasting performances of their respective cars. The Mercedes-powered Alpine has demonstrated a slightly higher top speed in qualifying, while the Ferrari engine in Bearman’s Haas excels in lower-end torque thanks to a smaller turbocharger. This tradeoff means that while Bearman was noticeably faster during the early phases of their second stint on hard tires, Gasly’s consistent pace began to shine through as the race unfolded.
Meanwhile, Ocon’s race was fraught with misfortune as he started on hard tires and faced timing issues with the safety car that derailed his strategy. Despite feeling more comfortable with his car’s performance compared to Australia, Ocon’s efforts to overtake Franco Colapinto backfired, costing him crucial points. Team principal Ayao Komatsu acknowledged the unfortunate pit stop error that led to Ocon being overtaken by Colapinto, which ultimately triggered the incident. “Esteban also had a very good race, but he was unlucky in his pit stop, where we had a mistake that put him in a position that he shouldn’t have been in,” Komatsu stated.
With aspirations for double points in Japan, the Haas F1 Team is poised to build on their early successes. The team has demonstrated their potential, and as they continue refining their strategies, the excitement surrounding Bearman and Ocon’s journey in the 2026 season is undoubtedly just heating up. As the competition intensifies, fans can expect thrilling races that showcase the resilience and talent of Haas as they aim for a standout season in Formula 1.
