The 2026 Formula 1 season kicked off with a bang at the Australian Grand Prix, but not without its fair share of drama and unexpected turns. Fans eagerly anticipated the first practice session, and the tension was palpable as Nico Hulkenberg led the pack out for Cadillac. However, the excitement quickly turned into concern as Aston Martin confirmed that their star driver Fernando Alonso would be sidelined due to a “suspected PU related issue.” This revelation sent shockwaves through the paddock, leaving Alonso’s fans and team on edge about his participation.

As the session unfolded, chaos ensued. Arvid Lindblad found himself stranded in the pit lane, triggering a Virtual Safety Car, while local hero Oscar Piastri faced a power crisis, exclaiming, “No power. I’m idling but I’ve got no power.” Fortunately, Piastri managed to regain power and resumed his run. Meanwhile, reigning champion Lando Norris expressed his dissatisfaction with his McLaren, complaining about “shocking” downshifts that threw off his rhythm.

Fifteen minutes into the session, Charles Leclerc seized the moment, clocking in a stunning 1:22.080 to take the lead, just 0.2 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen, with Kimi Antonelli trailing close behind. Valtteri Bottas, back with Cadillac, found himself in a frustrating position, caught in a Ferrari sandwich and voicing his grievances, “I got fully blocked by Hamilton.” It was clear that tensions were high as drivers grappled with both performance and technical issues.

Norris returned to the track just before the halfway mark, struggling to make an impact with a time that placed him 15th. Lindblad rejoined the action but was forced to maneuver around a slow Alpine, adding to the session’s chaotic atmosphere. George Russell took an early gamble, switching to soft tires but only managing to secure fifth place, 0.880 seconds behind Leclerc’s earlier medium tire time of 1:21.227.

As the session progressed, Verstappen made a bold move to the soft tires and briefly ascended to the top of the leaderboard with a time of 1:20.908. However, Leclerc wasn’t about to let him have the spotlight for long, responding with a blistering lap that improved his time to 1:20.829. Meanwhile, Hamilton was battling his own demons, clocking in four-tenths slower than his teammate.

The reigning champion’s session took a turn for the worse when gearbox issues forced Norris into the pits, leaving his mechanics scrambling as they worked on his MCL40. Alex Albon faced a significant setback, reporting that he had lost “power steering and everything,” which led to his car coming to a halt on the side of the track and bringing out yellow flags. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll also faced disappointment, with the team announcing after just three laps that “Car #18 will take no further part in FP1,” as both drivers’ issues were under investigation.

In a dramatic finale, Hamilton briefly edged into the lead with a time of 1:20.736, only for Leclerc to deliver a jaw-dropping late lap, securing P1 with a blistering 1:20.267, nearly half a second ahead of Hamilton, with Verstappen rounding out the top three. The session ended with a sense of anticipation, leaving fans buzzing as they recalled Norris’ record-breaking time from the previous year’s FP1 of 1:17.252. The stage is set for a thrilling race weekend, and all eyes will be on how these teams and drivers respond to the challenges that lie ahead.
