George Russell reveals how he used Lewis Hamilton as the ultimate benchmark for a groundbreaking season with Mercedes

George Russell has made headlines by declaring 2025 as his “strongest year” in Formula 1, attributing much of his success to the high bar set by fellow driver Lewis Hamilton during the 2021 season. Russell’s journey with Mercedes has been anything but straightforward, as he navigated a challenging set of circumstances that initially hindered his potential to contend for the championship. The W16, falling short against the likes of McLaren and Red Bull, forced Russell to dig deep to showcase his talent.

Throughout the 2025 season, Russell proved to be a formidable competitor, finishing outside the top 10 only once and claiming an impressive fourth in the Drivers’ standings with 319 points. His remarkable consistency led to nine podium finishes, including two significant victories in Canada and Singapore, which played a vital role in securing second place for Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship. This year marked a pivotal moment for Russell, as he took on the mantle of de facto team leader following Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari, paired instead with rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

As the penultimate round of the championship approached in Qatar, Russell reflected on his time with Mercedes, revealing that 2025 stood out as his best year yet. He shared his thoughts with the media, stating, “Yeah, definitely this. Well, I was very happy with ’22, because it was obviously my first year at Mercedes, first year team-mates with Lewis, and that was like a test for me to see how I was going to perform, and that was obviously at the back of ’21 when he was, in my eyes, probably the best performance that I’ve ever seen of Lewis over the course of a season. But obviously this year, more points, more podiums, more consistency, less mistakes. So, on the whole, this is without a doubt going to be my strongest year.”

Looking ahead, Mercedes is already being touted as potential favorites for the upcoming 2026 hybrid era, thanks to promising early results in dyno and bench testing. With McLaren and Williams continuing their partnerships alongside the addition of Alpine as a customer, the stage is set for an exhilarating battle on the track. If Mercedes can deliver a competitive car to rival McLaren, Russell could very well find himself in a prime position to chase that elusive first championship title, backed by a season of impressive performances and hard-earned experience. The anticipation surrounding his future is palpable, as fans and analysts alike eagerly await what this talented driver will achieve next.
