Apple has pulled back the curtain on the exhilarating behind-the-scenes journey of its much-anticipated F1 movie, showcasing the thrills and challenges encountered during filming at the iconic Silverstone Circuit. With a global streaming debut slated for December 12 on Apple TV, fans are brimming with excitement as they get a glimpse into the dynamic world of Formula 1 racing, captured during one of the sport’s most electrifying weekends.

Stepping onto this revered ground for the first time, Brad Pitt, who portrays the lead character Sonny Hayes, recounted the surreal experience of his initial day on set. “My first moment of filming is at Silverstone – race weekend in front of 120,000 fans. It was just surreal. It’s absolutely surreal,” he shared, encapsulating the overwhelming thrill of being part of such a monumental event.

Joining him in this high-octane adventure is Damson Idris, who plays the role of young racing talent Joshua Pearce. The palpable excitement radiating from the set was unmistakable. Idris expressed his confidence in the film’s potential impact, stating, “To just see that, we knew we would create something that’s going to stand the test of time.”

Directed by the talented Joseph Kosinski, who previously helmed the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, the film stands out for its groundbreaking integration into the real-world Formula 1 landscape. Thanks to an unprecedented level of access granted by the championship and the FIA, the production team was able to infuse an energy and authenticity into the film rarely seen in the genre. “Silverstone is where the first Formula 1 race is held and it has all this history,” Kosinski explained. “There’s no way we could have made this film without the tight partnership with Formula 1. Without the access we had, there’s no way we could have pulled these scenes off.”

The stakes were high, as filming unfolded during live race weekends, adding an extra layer of pressure. Pitt noted the meticulous planning required to avoid disrupting the tightly synchronized race schedule, saying, “We had to prove to F1 that we could slot ourselves into the race weekend without cocking up their programming, because it is military precision, it is to the minute.” The palpable tension was felt by all, as the team raced against the clock to capture the perfect shots.

In a particularly memorable moment, both Pitt and Idris stood shoulder to shoulder with the elite 20 drivers just before the national anthem played. With only one chance to get it right, the atmosphere was thick with anticipation. Idris recounted the experience, revealing how he turned to Pitt for advice on the proper protocol during the anthem. “I had Brad on my left and Verstappen on my right,” he recalled, humorously recounting his anxious query about race suit etiquette. “And I remember asking him: ‘When you guys sing the national anthem, do you put the race suit up or do you have it down – what do you do?'”

The weekend proved to be a resounding success for Kosinski and his crew. Reflecting on the intensity of the days spent filming, he said, “It was definitely one of the most intense days I’ve ever had on a film set. But the energy of the crowd, the cars, standing next to all the F1 drivers and then having Damson and Brad there with them… that was one of those moments I’ll never forget.”

As anticipation builds for the film’s release, the fusion of cinematic storytelling and the exhilarating world of Formula 1 promises to leave audiences on the edge of their seats. This blend of real-life racing drama and Hollywood flair is set to redefine the racing movie genre, ensuring that fans are in for an unforgettable ride.
