Fabio Quartararo emerged from the French Grand Prix at Le Mans with a rare sense of optimism after battling to a solid sixth-place finish in a challenging MotoGP weekend. The reigning world champion, riding for Yamaha, showed renewed confidence on home soil, a stark contrast to his usual frustration with Yamaha’s ongoing struggles this season.
Quartararo started strong, qualifying sixth and climbing to fifth in the Sprint race, thrilling the French fans. On race day, he surged early to second off the line, but the Yamaha’s lack of race pace forced him to gradually fall back to sixth. Despite the setback, Quartararo highlighted a key improvement: the gap to the race leader was significantly narrower than in previous rounds. “At Jerez, we finished 29 seconds behind Alex Marquez, whereas today we were 7 seconds behind Martin,” he pointed out, emphasizing that closing the deficit to the front is what truly matters.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this positive, even though we know our bike’s potential is still low,” Quartararo admitted. He praised his own performance, especially in the early laps when the pack remained tightly bunched, allowing him to push hard and enjoy some intense battles. “Today I was able to push 100% and had a lot of fun, especially in the early laps when the group was tight and it was easier to try to pass.”
The Frenchman recognized the high risk involved in maintaining his position throughout the race, particularly with the braking challenges Yamaha faces. “We had to be very gentle on the brakes,” he said, acknowledging the limitations of the M1 on race day. Still, this home race weekend marked a turning point in his mindset, as he expressed a positive outlook rarely seen this season.
Quartararo's sixth-place finish at Le Mans not only delivered valuable points but also hinted at potential progress for Yamaha, even if the overall package remains a work in progress. With several rounds still to come, the French star’s renewed confidence could signal a shift in momentum as he seeks to close the gap to the championship leaders.
