Supercars makes historic debut in christchurch for thrilling doubleheader

Supercars is set to ignite a new chapter in its electrifying saga by making a bold debut at Christchurch’s Ruapuna Motorsport Park, marking the historic first time the championship ventures into this fresh battleground. This thrilling expansion is part of the inaugural New Zealand doubleheader, spotlighting the second stage of the fiercely contested Jason Richards Memorial Trophy.

Despite Ruapuna Motorsport Park’s longstanding presence since 1963, its Supercars pedigree remains uncharted territory for most competitors, mirroring the mystery that surrounded Taupo’s debut earlier in 2024. The 3.30-kilometer circuit presents a unique challenge, largely unfamiliar to the drivers, with only Thomas Randle boasting prior experience here after clashing with future F1 legend Lando Norris in the Formula Regional Oceania Championship.

With a considerable gap between the Australian Grand Prix and this New Zealand showdown, savvy drivers have seized the opportunity to get acquainted with Ruapuna, clocking invaluable laps ahead of the high-stakes weekend. Among them, Blanchard Racing’s dynamic duo, James Golding and Aaron Cameron, have thrown down the gauntlet, determined to extend their formidable momentum from the start of the 2026 season.

Golding, drawing parallels to Taupo’s layout, described Ruapuna as a track that blends long, sweeping straights with a demanding, twisty midsection, creating a compelling mix for racers. “I went and drove it a couple of weeks ago in a little 86 and it is a good track. Good fun,” he revealed. “It is a bit different to Aussie tracks. I would say more similar to Taupo. Maybe a halfway between Winton and Taupo, so it will be interesting to see how the racing goes there. It is hard to tell, but there are some tight corners and there will be some tyre wear. We will see how it pans out.”

Cameron’s enthusiasm echoes the anticipation, highlighting the circuit’s thrilling risk-reward balance. “I think Christchurch is looking like a lot of fun with small run-offs,” he said. “There is real high reward if you take the risk. There are some high kerbs we will be smashing in the Ford Mustang. I cannot wait for it and am stoked to see what we can do there.”

As the Supercars pack gears up for this groundbreaking chapter in Christchurch, fans can expect adrenaline-fueled battles set against a backdrop of a fresh, challenging track. The blend of unfamiliar terrain and fierce competition promises an unforgettable spectacle, raising the stakes in the quest for the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy and setting the tone for a landmark season in New Zealand motorsport history.
