Kurt Busch honors Mark Martin and Jeff Burton’s pivotal support while gearing up for NASCAR Hall of Fame induction

As Kurt Busch stands on the brink of one of the most monumental moments in his illustrious career, the anticipation builds for his induction into the 2026 NASCAR Hall of Fame class. This celebration is not merely a recognition of his achievements but an opportunity for Busch to reflect on the pivotal figures who influenced his early journey in the world of NASCAR. Among the titans of the sport, two names resonate deeply with Busch—Mark Martin and Jeff Burton, his former teammates during his formative years at Roush Racing.

At just 22 years old, Busch burst onto the NASCAR scene, making his debut at Dover Motor Speedway in 2000. He arrived as a raw, fiercely talented driver, ready to carve out his place in the competitive landscape of stock car racing. Over the course of five full-time seasons with Roush Racing—now RFK Racing—Busch shared the track with some of the most respected veterans in the sport, including Martin and Burton. The wisdom and guidance these seasoned drivers imparted were instrumental in shaping Busch’s understanding of what it takes to thrive week after week in the NASCAR Cup Series.

In a recent teleconference with NASCAR.com, Busch reminisced about those formative years and emphasized how the lessons learned from Martin and Burton remained etched in his memory, especially as he transitioned into a mentorship role later in his career. “The second half of my career and being a little bit older and more experienced, usually at that time, my teammates were getting younger,” Busch noted. “It was cool because that’s what Mark Martin and Jeff Burton did for me when I was first starting out at Roush. And so you feel that moment of giving back and helping, and if you can make them better, they’re going to make you better.”

Busch’s journey culminated in a crowning achievement when he clinched his first Cup championship with Roush Racing, driving the iconic #97 Ford. He triumphed in the inaugural playoff-style championship by a mere eight points over the legendary Jimmie Johnson, securing 14 of his 34 career victories with the team that launched his career.

As Busch gears up for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, he also reflects on another significant influence in his life—NBA icon Michael Jordan. While joining 23XI Racing as their second driver, Busch recalls Jordan’s impactful words that resonated deeply with him. In a heartfelt moment, Busch shared, “He goes, ‘You know why we want to hire you to start this second car at 23XI because you race like I played the game of basketball. You race from your heart.’ I about melted. It defined my 30 years out on the racetrack. That’s who I am. I raced from here.”

Fans can witness this historic induction ceremony live on the NASCAR channel on Tubi today at 8 pm ET, marking a momentous occasion not just for Busch, but for all those who have followed his thrilling journey through the highs and lows of the NASCAR circuit.
