In a startling turn of events, Hendrick Motorsports has announced that star driver Alex Bowman will be sidelined for the upcoming Phoenix Cup race due to a concerning diagnosis of vertigo. This news comes hot on the heels of Bowman’s early departure from the Circuit of the Americas race, where he was forced to exit the DuraMax Texas Grand Prix Powered by RelaDyne on lap 71, leaving fans and the team alike anxious about his condition.
Bowman, 32, began feeling symptoms prior to his exit, prompting a thorough two-day medical evaluation following the race. In a bid to assess his health, he even took to the track at the Ten Tenths Motor Club in Concord, driving laps in a streetcar. However, team president Jeff Andrews has made it clear that Bowman’s health takes precedence over his racing ambitions. “Alex has worked very hard over the last several days. We’re encouraged by the progress he’s making, but we have to prioritize his health above all else. It’s obviously frustrating for him because he’s a competitor and wants to be in the race car, especially at his home track. We’ll continue to support Alex and look forward to his return as soon as he’s medically cleared,” Andrews stated.
As the racing world holds its breath, NASCAR driver Anthony Alfredo will step in to pilot the #48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy during the Straight Talk Wireless 500 scheduled for March 8, 2026. In a strategic move, the team plans to request a medical waiver for Bowman to maintain his eligibility for the 2026 championship despite this setback.
Bowman, known for his competitive spirit, has not shied away from discussing the challenges he faced last season. With a disappointing performance that saw him struggle to secure a playoff spot and ultimately exit championship contention, he was the only Hendrick driver without a win in the previous season. However, with the dawn of the 2026 season, significant changes have been implemented within the #48 team to turn the tide. “There’s no secret last year was a big struggle for us, and we’ve made an immense amount of changes to try to be better for 2026,” Bowman remarked.
The restructuring has been extensive, with fresh faces joining the crew, leaving only Bowman, his crew chief Blake, and spotter Kevin Hamlin intact. “Just trying to be better. So it’ll be interesting to get everybody working together and trying to jell, but I’m excited to get to the racetrack and get to work and get going on it,” he expressed, highlighting the excitement and hope for a turnaround.
Despite facing obstacles, Bowman had his moments of brilliance last season, finishing as the runner-up in both Miami and Richmond, and securing podium finishes at Dover Motor Speedway and EchoPark Speedway. However, as the 2026 season unfolds, he currently finds himself in a challenging 36th position in the standings with just 23 points from three starts. The racing community eagerly awaits his return, hoping to see the talented driver bounce back stronger than ever.
