In a striking and uncharacteristically candid moment, Chase Elliott has drawn attention to a critical safety concern looming over NASCAR, a sport that thrives on adrenaline but must prioritize its drivers’ well-being. Following alarming incidents during the recent race at Circuit of the Americas (COTA), where his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Alex Bowman faced severe heat-related health issues, Elliott’s warnings resonate louder than ever. Bowman’s abrupt decision to exit the race due to vertigo serves as a stark reminder of the physical toll that extreme heat can inflict on drivers.
The oppressive heat at COTA was not an isolated incident. Multiple drivers struggled with malfunctions in their cool-suit systems, which are designed to regulate body temperature within the cockpit. As the NASCAR circuit turns its attention to the blistering conditions expected at the upcoming race in Phoenix, Arizona, drivers are understandably anxious about the persistent heat management challenges they face.
Elliott, known for his reserved demeanor, did not hold back when discussing the intensity of the heat inside the Next Gen cars. In a revealing exchange with journalist Jeff Gluck, he illustrated the severity of the situation: “If you were going down the straightaway and if you stuck your hand out the window it’s cool and fresh air whereas now if you’re going down the straightaway… if you don’t have your gloves on you’ll probably burn it.” This metaphor highlights the oppressive conditions drivers endure, as the warm exhaust air from the vehicle exacerbates the already sweltering environment inside the car.
The design of the Next Gen cars plays a pivotal role in these rising temperatures. Elliott pointed out that the shape of the hood scoop contributes significantly to the heat problem, pushing warm air over the vehicle and creating a sauna-like atmosphere. While Elliott acknowledged the long-standing presence of cool shirts in the sport, he raised valid concerns about their reliability. Despite their introduction in 1964, inspired by astronaut suits, cool shirts have a checkered history of malfunctioning. “They always had a bad rep of failing, and that was why a lot of guys didn’t run them for years and years,” he reflected. However, Elliott remains hopeful that technological advancements have improved their effectiveness, leading more drivers to experiment with them under extreme conditions.
