Max Verstappen reflects on dramatic Nürburgring disqualification

Max Verstappen has finally broken his silence on the shocking disqualification that rocked his recent Nürburgring outing, calling the incident “a shame” but revealing it was caused by “a little mistake” during a pit-stop practice session. The Red Bull ace’s misstep came at a crucial moment as he gears up for his highly anticipated debut at the grueling Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race, set to take place from May 14 to 17.

In a stunning turn of events, Verstappen and his teammates Daniel Juncadella and Jules Gounon initially dominated the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) race, only to be disqualified after officials found they had used seven sets of tires instead of the permitted six across qualifying and the race. This error, while seemingly minor, proved catastrophic for the team’s result and cast a shadow over what had been an otherwise flawless performance.

Despite the setback, Verstappen is optimistic that this tough lesson will sharpen the team’s focus and strategy ahead of the much bigger challenge of the 24-hour endurance race. Speaking candidly about the incident, he said, “Overall, it was a great weekend. We had a really good time, together with my teammates also. Then, of course, we had a little mistake involved when we were practicing the pit stops, where they then added another set on the car when we were doing the other things. But besides that, of course in the race, it’s very straightforward where everyone just uses four new sets. A shame, of course, to lose it, but at the same time probably it puts the team on point. Maybe it needed that a little bit.”

Verstappen’s involvement in the Nürburgring endurance scene is a bold move that highlights his passion for racing beyond the Formula 1 circuit. Originally scheduled to clash with the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, the cancellation of that event has allowed Verstappen to fully commit to the 24-hour race’s qualifying sessions on April 18 and 19, where he will tackle the infamous Nordschleife at night for the first time—a daunting prospect even for the most seasoned racers.

This venture comes amid Verstappen’s growing frustration with the future direction of Formula 1, particularly the controversial 2026 regulations which he has branded “anti-racing.” His threats to walk away from the sport have sent shockwaves throughout the paddock, but the thrill and satisfaction he finds in endurance racing appears to offer a refreshing alternative. Reflecting on this, Verstappen admitted, “It’s impossible to compare, but I wanted to do that for a while. It’s really something that I enjoy a lot. Every time I jumped out of the car I was smiling and I think that’s always a good thing.”

With the Nürburgring 24 Hours rapidly approaching, all eyes will be on Verstappen to see if his raw speed and new-found endurance racing focus can translate into success on one of the world’s most demanding circuits. The disqualification may have been a bitter pill to swallow, but it might just be the wake-up call needed to push Red Bull’s GT program to new heights and fuel Verstappen’s racing fire in ways Formula 1 currently cannot.

As the motorsport world eagerly awaits the next chapter in Verstappen’s career, this episode at the Nürburgring serves as a stark reminder that even the best can stumble—but true champions use every setback as a stepping stone toward greatness.
