In a shocking twist at the Qatar Grand Prix, Formula 1 icon Fernando Alonso has opened up about a bizarre incident that left fans and analysts alike scratching their heads. The Aston Martin driver, known for his tenacity and keen insights, described a series of inexplicable car malfunctions that he whimsically attributed to “paranormal” activity. This revelation came on the heels of his solid seventh-place finish at the Lusail International Circuit, where he managed to snag six crucial points for his team in the fiercely competitive constructors’ championship.
Alonso’s race was not without drama. On lap 42, he experienced a hair-raising spin that saw him perform a complete 360-degree turn, narrowly avoiding disaster. Remarkably, he continued on his way with minimal disruption, though the incident cost him valuable positions, dropping him from a promising fifth place. After the race, Alonso candidly shared his perplexity regarding the spin, insisting that he had not collided with any other vehicle. “No, I was taking it easy,” he told the gathered media, expressing disbelief at the car’s erratic behavior. “The truth is that I wasn’t pushing 100%, but this car has disconnections; I don’t know what to call them, a bit paranormal, there’s a spirit inside the car.”
He went on to elaborate on the strange sensations he felt during the race. “Then yesterday, I suddenly lost the front end for three or four corners. In one of them, I suddenly went off onto the gravel, turning the steering wheel all the way. It was as if I had no front wheels.” The situation worsened, as Alonso described an unsettling loss of control from the rear as well. “And today it was the rear wheels, suddenly a lash, so we’re hypersensitive to the wind, hypersensitive to one or two degrees of temperature, we’re always on a knife edge and today I made that mistake, but fortunately I was very lucky that there was no gravel, that there was nothing and that I didn’t have a train of cars behind me.”
Despite the challenges he faced, Alonso’s seventh-place finish has left him optimistic about his prospects in the remaining race of the season. With only one event left, he still has a shot at securing a top-10 finish in the drivers’ championship. His performance since the Spanish Grand Prix in June has been commendable, especially given the unpredictable nature of his Aston Martin machine. As he looks towards the future, Alonso expressed a desire for substantial improvements from his team as he approaches the final year of his current contract.
The veteran driver has hinted at the possibility of retirement at the end of the 2026 season, but only under the condition that he can once again vie for top positions. Aston Martin, an ambitious team with aspirations of competing for race victories, faces tough competition from design savants like Adrian Newey of Red Bull and Ferrari’s Enrico Cardile. Alonso, who last tasted victory in the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix, is hopeful that the Silverstone-based squad will capitalize on their upward trajectory and finally allow him to challenge for wins again.
As the season draws to a close, all eyes will be on Alonso and Aston Martin, eager to see if they can harness their potential and exorcise any lingering “spirits” that may be haunting their performance.
