Max Verstappen defends Christian Horner as Red Bull’s spectacular revival unfolds after his departure

The 2025 Formula 1 season is shaping up to be one of the most tumultuous chapters in the history of Red Bull Racing. The sudden and controversial departure of Christian Horner, the team’s iconic leader, sent shockwaves through the paddock. However, under the dynamic leadership of Max Verstappen, the team has rediscovered its winning form, clinching six victories out of the last twelve races, an impressive 50% success rate since the midpoint of the season. This remarkable turnaround has sparked fresh debates, particularly in light of remarks from Helmut Marko, who suggested that Red Bull could have dominated the championship had Horner been ousted sooner.

Max Verstappen, the driving force behind this revival, dismisses any oversimplified analyses of the situation. The four-time world champion argues that juxtaposing the Horner era with that of his successor, Laurent Mekies, is misguided. “The results that we see today are the result of decisions made and implemented over the last few months,” Verstappen stated in a recent interview. He insists that Horner’s impact extends far beyond the early races of the season, continuing to shape the team’s current trajectory.

Acknowledging the internal strife that preceded the leadership change, Verstappen admits, “The results weren’t good, and there was unrest within the team. When performance lacks, shareholders want to see change.” This tense atmosphere ultimately led to a radical decision, yet it does not erase the contributions made under Horner’s stewardship.

Beyond the competitive aspect, Verstappen emphasizes the personal bond he shares with Horner, especially following the high-stakes season of 2021 marked by intense rivalries. “He stepped into the fray for me,” Verstappen recalls, highlighting the commitment and sacrifices made by his former boss. This connection remains resilient despite their professional separation.

Horner has not wavered in his support for Verstappen, as the Dutch driver reveals that their conversations continue regularly, particularly during Grand Prix weekends. “He always wishes me good luck. He tells me he believes in me, that he is my biggest fan,” Verstappen shares. For him, Horner’s influence remains deeply embedded in the team’s culture. “Christian achieved great results for Red Bull. He also brought in people who played a key role in this comeback,” he notes, while acknowledging that some individuals have yet to reach that level of impact.

As the 2025 season unfolds, Red Bull Racing continues to build upon a complex legacy defined by both upheaval and continuity, coupled with a revival in performance. With Verstappen at the helm and Horner’s enduring presence still felt in Milton Keynes, the Red Bull saga is far from reaching its final act.
