Jorge Lorenzo reveals shocking secrets behind his fierce rivalry with Valentino Rossi

Jorge Lorenzo has pulled back the curtain on his intense rivalry with Valentino Rossi, revealing the lengths he went to gain a competitive edge over the Italian legend. This storied feud ignited in 2008 when Lorenzo burst onto the MotoGP scene, while Rossi was already basking in the glory of five world titles in the 500cc and MotoGP categories. By the end of that year, Rossi would reclaim the championship, but it was not long before Lorenzo began carving his own path to greatness, ultimately securing his first world title in 2010, followed by two more.

The climax of their rivalry crescendoed in 2015, a year marked not only by Lorenzo’s pursuit of another championship but also by the emergence of tensions between Rossi and Marc Márquez. Despite Márquez’s interference, Lorenzo showcased his undeniable skill and determination, clinching the title through sheer merit. In a candid conversation with Moto.it, Lorenzo opened up about the obsessive measures he took to ensure he was the best on the grid.

“I can say it now. Let me give you an example of the level of obsession I had to try to win: I bought a motorhome that could be completely dismantled,” Lorenzo revealed, emphasizing his desire for customization. Unlike the typical American-style motorhomes, his was tailored to his specifications, complete with a cryosauna designed to push the limits of recovery. “I would immerse myself at minus 180 degrees for three minutes after every training session,” he shared, illustrating the extreme lengths he was willing to go.

Lorenzo’s quest for secrecy was paramount. He intentionally kept this innovative recovery method under wraps, particularly because his motorhome was often parked next to Rossi’s. “I would tell Kike, my assistant, to hide the hydrogen behind the motorhome. No one would see it, not even Max, Valentino’s assistant. I wanted to keep it a secret to maintain my competitive advantage,” he explained, underscoring the cutthroat nature of elite sports.

However, the logistics of his regimen were intricate. Lorenzo had to source hydrogen from a nearby facility for his cryosauna, often requiring his assistant to travel 100 kilometers to secure it during race weekends. “I did this in 2015, and in the end, I won the championship,” he reminisced, demonstrating how his meticulous planning and execution paid off.

Lorenzo’s preparation extended beyond just physical recovery. He sought out a doctor with a unique methodology to enhance his strength, employing a physiotherapist and investing countless hours into his training. He drew parallels with sports icons like Cristiano Ronaldo, who similarly dedicate themselves to relentless improvement. “He invests 12 hours a day just to be better, putting in more hours than anyone else, and in the end, that makes the difference,” Lorenzo concluded, highlighting the relentless pursuit of excellence that defines champions in the world of sports.
