McLaren delivers explosive verdict on Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri’s management dynamics

Published:

The buzz surrounding McLaren’s strategy for managing their star drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, has reached a fever pitch among Formula 1 enthusiasts. As the anticipation builds for the 2026 season, fans have decisively weighed in on how the iconic team should navigate its driver dynamics.

Since Piastri’s entry into McLaren at the start of the 2023 season, team leadership, including CEO Zak Brown and team principal Andrea Stella, has championed the philosophy of equal treatment for both drivers. However, the narrative shifted when Piastri was mathematically eliminated from title contention in 2024, leading the team to shift its focus towards Norris as he aimed to dethrone reigning champion Max Verstappen.

The 2025 season, however, showcased a different story. Both Norris and Piastri found themselves in the heat of the title chase from the very first race in Australia. Their intense rivalry erupted on multiple occasions, with memorable clashes taking place in Canada, Singapore, and Austin. Despite these fierce moments, McLaren maintained a commendable approach, treating both drivers as equals throughout the season. Notably, even during the high-stakes finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, neither driver was labeled as the number one, reinforcing the team’s commitment to parity.

Now that Norris has clinched his first drivers’ title, the question arises: is it time for McLaren to reevaluate its approach? According to a recent poll conducted by RacingNews365, the overwhelming majority of Formula 1 fans believe the answer is a resounding no. A striking 67% of respondents advocate for continued equality between the two drivers heading into the next season, while 26.2% suggest that Piastri should receive preferential treatment. Only a mere 6.8% of fans feel that Norris should be designated as the team’s principal driver.

As McLaren gears up for another thrilling season, the team faces a pivotal decision that could shape its competitive edge. The voices of the fans are clear: equality is the path forward. The stage is set, and all eyes will be on how McLaren navigates this critical juncture in their quest for success in Formula 1.
