Franco Colapinto is gearing up for his inaugural full-time Formula 1 season, and he’s doing so with a sense of exhilaration that stems from an unprecedented experience in his racing career: a proper off-season. After two tumultuous seasons where he was thrust into the action mid-year, Colapinto is now poised to make his mark with Alpine, having officially taken over Logan Sargeant’s seat at Williams during the 2023 season and then Jack Doohan’s at Alpine from Imola onward.
As he embarks on this new chapter, 2024 marks a significant turning point for the 22-year-old driver. This off-season has been transformative, allowing him to truly integrate with the Enstone-based team and prepare meticulously for the challenges that lie ahead. The recent unveiling of Alpine’s A526 not only symbolizes a fresh start for the team, which has now transitioned to a Mercedes power unit, but it also highlights Colapinto’s relatively nascent journey in the sport.
With the new power unit regulations ushering in a new era, all drivers are essentially starting from scratch, presenting a unique opportunity for Colapinto to establish his footing. “Firstly, I am so excited,” he exclaimed, reflecting on the significance of this off-season. “For the first time in my career, I have had a proper off-season in preparation for a full-time year right from testing and the first race.”
This newfound stability is crucial for Colapinto. He emphasized feeling deeply connected to the Alpine project, which empowers him to collaborate closely with his team from the outset. “We have had a good chance to see the car and prepare on the simulator. Of course, it is very different to anything I have experienced so far and I think that is the same for most drivers on the grid,” he noted.
As Colapinto navigates this new landscape filled with innovative challenges and learning curves, he views this as an incredible opportunity. His determination to extract maximum performance from the A526 is palpable. “There are new tricks and new challenges to learn to extract the most from the package and I see that as a truly amazing challenge,” he stated, embodying the spirit of a racer ready to tackle the unknown.
Colapinto remains optimistic about the season ahead, acknowledging the collective ambition within the team. “I know everyone at the team is extremely motivated to have a good season. I will just try to learn as much as possible in the early races, keep building, keep growing and hopefully that will mean we can be competitive as a team.” With this blend of excitement and strategic focus, Colapinto is set to make waves in the fast-paced world of Formula 1.
