The intensity of the Australian Grand Prix qualifying reached a fever pitch as Q2 unfolded under the bright lights of Albert Park. However, Charles Leclerc’s early attempt fell flat, barely improving on his first round performance as he struggled to break into the sub-20 second bracket. The Mercedes team, on the other hand, showcased their prowess when George Russell stormed into the session’s early lead, clocking the first lap in the 18-second range, closely followed by promising talents Kimi Antonelli and Isack Hadjar. Lewis Hamilton, determined to find every ounce of speed, abandoned his initial lap and returned to the pits to switch to a fresh set of tires.
As the clock ticked down to six minutes remaining in Q2, the pressure mounted. In the elimination zone, high-profile names like Pierre Gasly, Oliver Bearman, Nico Hülkenberg, Franco Colapinto, Alex Albon, and even the seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton found themselves at risk of missing out on the next round. Ferrari’s struggles were evident, particularly for Leclerc, whose car was hampered by electrical power delivery issues, landing him in a frustrating seventh place. Meanwhile, Hamilton, despite finally getting a lap time on the board, was still vocal about the car’s battery not delivering the performance he craved.
In a dramatic turn, Leclerc managed to improve, finally dipping into the 19-second barrier, while Hamilton clawed his way up to P6, showing resilience in the face of adversity.
As the dust settled at the end of Q2, the likes of Nico Hülkenberg, Oliver Bearman, Esteban Ocon, Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon, and Franco Colapinto were left on the sidelines, eliminated from the battle for pole position. The top ten was filled with fierce competitors: George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Kimi Antonelli, Oscar Piastri, Isack Hadjar, Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton, Arvid Lindblad, Liam Lawson, and Gabriel Bortoleto. However, it was a bitter end for Bortoleto, who was stranded at the pit entrance due to transmission issues, despite showing exceptional pace throughout the session.
