Scott McLaughlin claps back at Bubba Wallace’s crash jokes

Scott McLaughlin fired back at Bubba Wallace’s ongoing jabs over his 2025 Indianapolis 500 crash as the Indy 500 practice kicked off on May 12. The Team Penske driver, who was sidelined from the iconic race before it even began last year due to a brutal crash, has become the subject of good-natured ribbing from Wallace, his close friend and 23XI Racing teammate. Wallace’s sarcastic remarks have kept the incident alive in their banter, but McLaughlin showed he’s more than capable of returning fire.

When asked about Wallace’s teasing, McLaughlin took it in stride but didn’t hold back: “Yeah, I mean, he's getting pumped by his teammate right now. I'm not really worried about it.” He quickly reinforced the strength of their friendship, emphasizing, “But, no, no, no. We're great friends and that's his sense of humour and I love the guy all the most.”

Wallace’s 2026 NASCAR Cup Series campaign continues to lag behind that of his teammate Tyler Reddick, who has already claimed five wins and leads the championship standings after a dominant start. While Wallace has flashed speed, he has struggled to find consistent finishes within the No. 23 team, suffering another disappointing result last weekend.

Tensions flared briefly at Watkins Glen after Sunday’s race when Wallace and Christopher Bell engaged in a serious face-to-face discussion on pit road. The confrontation stemmed from a late-race pit incident. With eight laps remaining and a fierce battle for track position underway, Bell closed in on Wallace near Turns 6 and 7 as Wallace prepared to pit. Forced to slow to avoid contact, Wallace lost several spots, ultimately finishing 29th, while Bell ended 21st. Earlier in the race, Wallace had spun following contact with John Hunter Nemechek around lap 35.

Despite the tense exchange, Wallace’s spotter later clarified that the driver was not angry with Bell. Shane van Gisbergen capitalized on his pole position to win the race for Trackhouse Racing, further shaking up the points battle.

Heading into the 13th race of the 2026 season, Wallace holds a slim two-point advantage over Bell in the Cup Series standings, underscoring the tight competition as the championship heats up. Meanwhile, McLaughlin’s IndyCar focus shifts back to redemption at Indianapolis, with his comeback story set to unfold under the intense spotlight.
