Bono reveals dramatic admiration for Antonelli: “he has traits of Hamilton and Schumacher”

In a stunning display of talent, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has burst onto the Formula 1 scene, securing his first-ever victory at the Chinese Grand Prix. This monumental achievement not only highlights Antonelli’s burgeoning career but also cements his status as the 13th driver on the current grid to claim a Grand Prix win. The competition, however, is fierce, with nine other drivers still seeking their first taste of victory, including notable names like Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg.

The excitement surrounding Antonelli’s triumph is palpable, especially within the Mercedes camp, which wasted no time in backing the Italian prodigy. With Lewis Hamilton set to join Ferrari for the 2025 season, Antonelli is firmly positioned as Hamilton’s successor. This transition is further underscored by the fact that the legendary engineer Peter ‘Bono’ Bonnington is now in Antonelli’s corner, providing him with the technical expertise that has shaped the careers of some of the sport’s greatest icons.

Bonnington was visibly moved during the post-race interviews, and his comments to Sky Sports UK were nothing short of electrifying. He drew compelling parallels between Antonelli and two of the sport’s all-time greats, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton. “When I read the book about how with 10,000 hours of practice anyone can excel in any discipline, I believed it at first. But then I met people like Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, and you realize that for certain things, it’s not just about practice. You either have it, or you don’t, and Antonelli has it,” Bonnington declared.

He went on to elaborate on Antonelli’s exceptional skills, noting, “He has that extra tenth, or even two tenths, that only the greats possess. You can see it in the data. We often wonder how he manages to be so fast while maintaining a neutral car and managing tire temperatures. Yet, he does it with ease. Watching him is a spectacle.”

Antonelli’s rise to the top echelon of Formula 1 is not just a personal triumph; it signals a thrilling new chapter for Mercedes as they look to the future. With the departure of a seasoned champion like Hamilton, the spotlight now shines brightly on Antonelli, whose combination of raw speed and tactical prowess could redefine the dynamics of the sport for years to come. Fans and analysts alike will be eager to see how this young talent continues to evolve in the high-stakes world of Formula 1 racing.
